Indian art is a vibrant reflection of the country’s rich cultural heritage with a blend of history, tradition, and creativity. Warli, Madhubani, Gond, Kolam, Pattachitra, and Phad are some of India’s most celebrated traditional art forms, each deeply rooted in the cultural and regional heritage of the country.  Indian Art, in many ways influences the education material of young learners and can be a great tool for a rich learning experience during early childhood education.

Why Indian Art and Culture in Education?

Children love drawing, since it is a medium that allows them to express their creativity and imagination. In order to draw a variety of things, they should be able to see art that advances their imagination, provides inspiration and broadens their visual vocabulary. Indian art forms are effective resources to teach design, patterns and symmetry. At Podar Prep, we integrate innovation with tradition and offer early childhood education that celebrates art and culture of India which fosters creativity and instills a strong sense of identity into children.

How art is used in Podar Prep Curriculum

In our curriculum, we cover Indian art forms which include Warli Art, (shapes based creation); Madhubani (intricate lines based drawing) Gond (dots based designing). Besides Indian combinations, we also include global art inspirations, such as Henri Matisse’s (scissors cutting painting), Alexander Calder’s, mobile designer and Piet Mondrian’s, lines and colors expressions.

We carefully integrate various art forms into activities that spark creativity and skill development. For instance,

  • Terracotta art introduces children to clay molding, where they shape simple objects like diyas or animals, enhancing motor skills and sensory awareness.
  • Madhubani art involves a lot of drawing and painting. Through this children can understand patterns and symmetry and are more likely to feel empowered to draw and paint with lines and colours.
  • Warli art involves shape based drawing, which fosters understanding of geometric designs.
  • Tearing, cutting and pasting are becoming more vivid – with the Henri Matisse scheme, where children cut out pictures and then glue them into collage.

Through this education becomes more meaningful and enjoyable because every activity has its own artistic or cultural focus that helps to develop appropriate skills for every kid.

Art plays an important role in fostering holistic development in children. Activities like Warli and Madhubani art help in improving analysis and interpretation and imagination. These arts also foster cognitive skills. Such nurturing activities support a child’s life by fostering mental well-being, providing good outlets for emotion, and enhancing emotional intelligence. On top of these, exposure to Indian and global art promotes appreciation of cultural differences among children as well as the beauty of different traditions. You can encourage Indian art activities at home too through Indian colouring books and drawing books, and explore more resources online.
