Help! My Child Never Listens To Me

Help! My Child Never Listens To Me

It is often puzzling for parents to understand why their preschool-going-child is not listening to them. Whether it is asking them to clean up their toys, sit for a meal, or follow simple instructions, parents may find themselves repeating requests with little success. This behavior is often not about defiance but can stem from developmental stages, emotional needs, and communication gaps. At Podar Prep Preschool, we emphasize understanding these behaviors and teaching strategies to foster better communication and listening skills in children.

Reasons Preschoolers May Not Listen

  • Developmental Stage: Children are very curious, energetic, and easily distracted during this developmental stage. Children test boundaries at this developmental stage. Sometimes, the desire for independence can be misconstrued as ignoring instructions when, in fact, they are making a declaration of independence or trying to process what is being asked of them.
  • Emotional Condition: A child’s emotional state is an important factor influencing his ability to listen. For example, a hungry, tired, or frustrated child is less likely to listen or obey. Preschoolers are still learning to verbally express their feelings and might engage in behaviors that seem disobedient or inattentive as a result of their emotional discomfort.
  • Communication Gaps: Preschoolers are still developing language comprehension skills. Instructions that adults perceive as simple may be too complex for them. Breaking directions into smaller steps helps bridge these communication gaps.
  • Wish to exercise their degree of control: Preschoolers crave feelings that reflect control over their environment. However, when children feel the decisions were made without them having anything to say, they rebel. They may not listen not because they are disobedient but because they want more independent playtime.

Encourage preschoolers to improve on their listening skills by being tolerant, understanding, and practicing the right techniques. Use the following effective strategies :

  • Get on Their Level: When talking to your child, drop down to their eye level. This physical contact captures their attention and promotes a feeling of respect while speaking.
  • Keep It Simple: When giving directions, use short, simple sentences. Instead of saying, “Stop running around and come sit on this chair right now,” say, “Please sit here.”
  • Provide Choices: Give choices, allowing the child to decide, but within boundaries, for example,”Would you like to wear the red sweater or the blue one?” The provision of choices makes a child feel in control and therefore guided.
  • Model Good Listening: Children learn best by observing. Give your child your full attention, and validate their feelings. This is an example: “I see you are mad because you can’t go outside right now.”
  • Use Positive Reinforcement: Acknowledge and praise your child when they listen well. Positive reinforcement motivates children to repeat good behavior.
  • Be Consistent: Consistency in expectations and routines helps preschoolers understand what is expected of them. Children thrive in predictable environments where boundaries are clear.
